So, you want to learn how to jump higher?
It's all in the feet buddy.
Have you ever watched how a basketball player sets up for a slam dunk? If you watch their feet, you will see that they nearly ALL do it the same way.
That's right, it's a specific maneuver, not just a random talent some guys have, that let's the leap to such great heights.
That said, this skill is useful for all kinds of athletes whether basketball, baseball, volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, Parkour and Free Running, and Acrobats of all kinds. Being able to get 6 inches or more over your competitor's leap is an incredible advantage... and it also happens to be incredibly awesome!
So, in this article, we are going to focus on the footing. If you want to know more about jump mechanics and Plyometrics, you should check out Luke Lowrey's Vertical Project, which is far beyond the scope of this document. Those techniques can more than DOUBLE your vertical leap.
So what's the secret? Plyometrics.
"Plyometrics is a type of exercise that uses explosive movements to develop muscular power, the ability to generate a large amount of force quickly. It may be used, for example, to improve the effectiveness of a boxer's punch, or to quicken the throwing ability of a baseball pitcher. Plyometric training acts on both the musculotendinous and neurological levels to increase an athlete's power output without necessarily increasing their maximum strength output." - Wikipedia
Using an existing force, you can literally "spring load" your legs to prepare for an oncoming jump.
Watch this amazing 720 dunk... watch the players feet (there's a good angle right at the end)
Did you see that? He turned and stomped BOTH feet down before launching into the air.
Don't tell me that's not cool!
This is a basic Plyometric technique. He used the force of his run, then "stomped" it, and exploded that energy upwards by forcing his legs and arms upwards suddenly (BEFORE loosing the force of his run).
So... how can you do it?
Depth jumping. That's right, Plyometrics 101. You need to train your muscles for explosion.
Once your body knows how to respond the force caused by a drop or sudden stop, your explosivness will come alive.

Also, check out my exercises page for more examples of this technique.
It IS possible to injure yourself using these techniques however, so I highly recommend that you get a more well-rounded education at The Vertical Project. If you don't gain at least 6" on your jump, Luke will pay you $100. That's how solid the technique is.
